Fontasy.de - FAQ

Last revison on December 23rd 2008. Please read the FAQ before flooding my mailbox!

(a detailed description on how to download and install new fonts can be found here: -> Win XP or -> Win 2000!)

Download Fonts:

Nothing easier than that: Just click (left mouse button!) on one of the previews, wait for the downloading dialogue and then save the *.zip file to your harddisk - preferrably in an easily accessible folder (e.g. Desktop).

Install Fonts (Windows):
(a detailed manual can be found here!)

The downloaded Zip-Files have to be unpacked, which can be done with Windows XP's (or higher) integrated ZIP functionality. I suppose Winzip is also a good choice. After that, you can unpack the *.ttf / *.otf font files from the archives to the fonts folder which may be c:\windows\fonts or c:\winnt\fonts. After unpacking them, open the font folder and wait for a while until the fonts are installed. Some older realeases of windows may require rebooting the machine to complete the installation of new fonts. After the successful installation, you can delete the ZipFile and start the program with which you'd like to use the font.

Fonts used on Fontasy's Homepage:

I'm often asked for the fonts I use on my site, these Gilligan's Island (logo), Stone Sans (page titles), Zoomorphica and Cobb (A-Z Logos).

All-In-One Zip-File / Container-Files?

This would exceed the traffic limits of my site by far. And additionally, it would be almost completely in vain to design all those download-pages. And it is NOT fun to upload a giant Zip-File over and over again after having added some single fonts to the archive. My clear answer: NO! If you're looking for many fonts in one box, the internet has truckloads of offers for you and $10 can buy you 1000s of crappy fonts.

Legal Disclaimer - Freeware / Shareware?

This archive only contains free fonts, most of them are even "freeware", but there is also some "shareware" to find. The Zips often have additional textfiles including copyright information from the author of the font. If you find a commercial font in my archive, please contact me IMMEDIATELY! The font will be removed the same day.
If you would like to use one of the fonts commercially, you should, IN ANY CASE, contact
the author of the font, e.g. by mail.

Creating your own fonts:

By now, there is some good shareware to do this (www.high-logic.com), but who wants to design fonts professionally should use Fontlab 4.6 (-> http://www.fontlab.com/) (also available for MAC), which is quite expensive.

Print Fonts in Graphics Files

When printing a graphics file using fonts (if you don't have a damn good printer), fonts often look blurred. In these cases, you should use a DTP software like Pagemaker or Publisher and create a transparent text object on top of the graphic, which makes your printer print the ttf's as it's supposed to.

Preview Graphics and that stuff...:

The Preview Graphics on Fontasy.de were created manually by using Ulead Photo Impact 6.0. There is a free trial to download at http://www.ulead.com/. Some other graphics in my site were created using Macromedia Fireworks and Photoshop.
